Modeling a railing post
Reset 3d max program if you already using it. Otherwise start 3d max application.
Create a Box in the perspective viewport and place it at (0, 0, 0).
Select the box and go to modify tab and change the parameters as below.

Create a rectangle in the top viewport with length =3.6 and width = 3.6.
Then create a circle in the left viewport with radius = 0.5
Select the circle and go to Create panel > Geometry button > Compound Objects > Object Type rollout > Loft button.
Click the get Path button in Creation Method rollout and select the rectangle from the viewport.
Deselect the Smooth Length option in Smoothing group under Surface Parameters rollout.
Place the lofted object at (0,0,0) and keep align with the early created box (you may use Angle Snap Toggle)
Change the Z position of the lofted object as 4.0, copy the object and place it at (0, 0, 32).
Your Perspective view should like below.
Create a box and change the parameters of the box as Length = 5.6, Width = 5.6 and Height = 0.5 and place it at (0, 0, 0).
Create another box and change the parameters of the box as Length = 4.6, Width = 4.6 and Height = 0.5 and place it at (0, 0, 0.5).
Select one box and convert it to poly. Go to Create panel > Geometry button > Compound Objects > Object Type rollout > Boolean button.
Select Union from Operation group under Parameters rollout. Click Pick Operand B button in Pick Boolean rollout and select the other box (not the bigger box).
Without deselecting the Boolean object make a mirror a copy of it through Z axis, and place it (0, 0, 36).
Select one of the Boolean object and connect all the other objects by using Boolean > Union. (Make sure to switch off the Boolean button by right clicking anywhere in the viewport after every Boolean operation before compound another object.)
Create a Capsule in the perspective viewport by clicking Capsule button in Create panel > Geometry button > Extended Primitives > Object Type rollout
Go to modify panel and change the parameters of created Capsule as, Radius = 1, Height = 24, height Segs = 1 and sides =24
Select the capsule from top viewport and right click on Select and Move button and change the parameters of Absolute:World group as X =2.5, Y = 0 and Z = 6.
Take three more copies from the Capsule by select and drag the Capsule with holding key in top viewport. Change X, Y values of the created Capsules to be symmetrical around the Compounded object. (X =0, Y=2.5; X =-2.5, Y=0; X =0, Y=-2.5)
Select one Capsule from the viewport, right-click on the viewport and select Convert to: > Convert to Editable Poly. Click Attach button and select other three capsules from the viewport.
Select the compounded object (not the capsules) from the perspective viewport and go to Create panel > Geometry button > Compound Objects > Object Type rollout > Boolean button. Select Subtraction(A-B) from Operation group and select one of the Capsules from the viewport.
Select the new compound object and convert to Editable Poly as early.
Go to Polygon subobject level and delete all the top and bottom faces. Exit from Polygon subobject level and aply Cap Holes modifire. Then convert it back to Editable Poly. Then go to Polygon subobject level, select top polygon and move it 4 units through Z axis to obtain following figure.
Now your railing post is ready to use.

Good points raised here, (well, what I could read of it). I suffer from color blindness (protanopia to be precise). I mainly use Opera browser (unsure if that is important), and much of your web page has display problems for me. I don’t wish to whinge, and I know it is my problem really, however it would be cool if you would consider color blind surfers when doing the next web page re-working.
i like very much for 3d max modeling
it very beautiful i want that type of tutorial can you give me some another tutorial
Tell me what type of tutorials you need. I’ll try to add few of them as I got time.
Very nice tutorial you have here!
also the expansion one, to use it with a stair is very good
but can you make a tutorial to create the effect of a rocket with the smoke and fire behind it when it flies, I can’t seem to get that result at all.
If you can make one of those, I’d really like it.
thanks for Idea, for capsule and boolean now i can do it . thanks for you
good tutorials thanks for sharing idea
nice tutorials can you make on show how to make a building and also one show showing the editable poly menu for those that are learning.
Thanks
